In a notable diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Swiss President Guy Parmelin with three award-winning Indian cheeses during their meeting in New Delhi on Monday. This exchange is part of broader discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between India and Switzerland, focusing on key areas such as trade, investment, mobility, and critical technologies.

The selected cheeses—Gulmarg, Konark, and Yeoor—were chosen not only for their quality but also as a tribute to Switzerland's renowned cheese-making tradition. Gulmarg, a heart-shaped Brie made from pasteurized cow's milk, is celebrated for its creamy texture and earthy flavors, having won the Super Gold award at the 2026 Mundial do Queijo do Brasil.

Konark, inspired by the French Tomme style, features a rustic natural rind and is known for its savory taste with a hint of lemon. It has garnered accolades, including a Gold medal at the 2023 World Cheese Awards in Norway and a Silver in Switzerland in 2025. Yeoor, the third cheese, is a mountain-style product reminiscent of Swiss Gruyère, aged for eight to nine months to develop its nutty and herbaceous flavors, making it ideal for fondue and grilled dishes.

President Parmelin's visit to India is significant as it marks his first state visit and follows his attendance at the AI Impact Summit earlier this year. Upon his arrival in New Delhi, he received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, reflecting the importance of this diplomatic engagement.

Looking ahead, the discussions between the two leaders are expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including technology and trade. As India and Switzerland continue to strengthen their ties, this meeting serves as a foundation for future collaborations that could benefit both nations economically and culturally.
