The project aims to enhance travel efficiency for tourists and business travelers across northern India.
Construction will be under the 'Make in India' initiative, focusing on affordability and local employment.
In a significant development for India's transportation infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially approved the Northern Corridor of the bullet train network. This ambitious project is set to drastically reduce travel times, with the journey from Delhi to Agra expected to take only 59 minutes. The announcement was made by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during an event in Varanasi on October 31, 2026, where he also flagged off the new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service.
The Northern Corridor will connect several major cities, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna, and Siliguri, ultimately extending to Guwahati in Assam. This network is anticipated to transform intercity travel, making it significantly faster and more convenient for tourists, business travelers, and students alike. The proposed travel times highlight the corridor's potential impact, with journeys from Delhi to Kanpur taking approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and from Delhi to Lucknow around 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the transformative nature of the bullet train initiative, stating that it would greatly benefit various demographics, including youth, middle-income groups, and artisans in small-scale industries. He noted that the project would be remembered for generations, reflecting its importance in improving connectivity and economic opportunities. The minister also assured that ticket prices would be competitive, aiming to be lower than airfares, thus making high-speed travel accessible to a broader audience.
The proposed bullet train route is expected to enhance access to several popular tourist destinations, including the culturally significant cities of Ayodhya and Varanasi. With Agra being home to the iconic Taj Mahal, the reduced travel time is likely to encourage more day trips from Delhi, boosting local tourism. Additionally, Prayagraj, known for its religious significance, and Patna, a gateway to historical sites, will benefit from improved connectivity.
Looking ahead, the government is set to provide further details regarding the project's timeline, station locations, and construction costs. While the initial announcement outlines the ambitious scope of the Northern Corridor, stakeholders await more specific information about the implementation schedule and expected operational dates. The initiative aligns with the government's broader vision to enhance high-speed rail connectivity across India, marking a pivotal step in modernizing the country's transportation infrastructure.
