The Niger government has reported that a group of soldiers attempted to stage a mutiny, with gunfire and explosions echoing through Niamey, the capital. Defence Minister General Salifou Mody confirmed that the situation is now under control after the soldiers took several officers hostage at Diori Hamani International Airport, a key military site.
This incident marks the third attack on the airport this year, following previous assaults by jihadi rebels. The ruling military junta, which has been in power since a coup in 2023, has faced increasing pressure due to ongoing violence and economic challenges. In response, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland has called for unity among the citizens and security forces.
