Indian stock markets experienced a notable downturn on Monday, with the Nifty 50 index falling below the critical threshold of 22,400. The decline was attributed to ongoing foreign selling, technical weaknesses, and concerns regarding the Reserve Bank of India's recent measures to stabilize the rupee. By afternoon trading, the Nifty was recorded at 22,369.60, down 150.85 points or 0.67% from the previous close, after reaching a high of 22,651 earlier in the day.

The market's struggles can be traced back to significant technical breaches. Kranthi Bathini, director of equity strategy at WealthMills Securities, emphasized the importance of maintaining the 22,500 level, which has now been broken. This pattern of volatility has been evident over recent weeks, with the Nifty now approximately 1,770 points, or 7.3%, below its August 28 closing figure of 24,142.45. Foreign institutional investors have been a major factor in this decline, having sold a staggering Rs 3.04 lakh crore worth of Indian equities in 2026 alone, nearly doubling the total for the entire previous year.

In addition to foreign selling, the Reserve Bank of India's recent interventions to stabilize the rupee have unsettled traders. The central bank's decision to open a dollar window for public sector oil companies and reduce hedging limits has raised concerns about the currency's stability. While the rupee gained against the dollar initially, the market's reaction has been one of caution, interpreting these measures as indicative of underlying stress. Analysts warn that such interventions may not reverse the rupee's depreciation trend but could slow it down.

The increase in the India VIX, which measures market volatility, further underscores the prevailing investor anxiety. Rising by 7.5% to surpass the 15 mark, the VIX indicates that traders are seeking more protection against potential market swings, a common occurrence during downturns. This volatility is not limited to large-cap stocks; midcaps and smallcaps are also experiencing heightened fluctuations.

Looking ahead, market analysts are closely monitoring geopolitical developments, particularly in the Middle East, alongside crude oil prices and the upcoming earnings season. Investors are also awaiting September's inflation data, which could significantly influence expectations regarding interest rates and the rupee's performance.
