In a recent statement, the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Shatrujeet Kapur, confirmed that Indian and Chinese forces are currently engaged in ongoing face-offs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. This revelation comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations, prompting the Indian government to reiterate the necessity of maintaining peace in border areas to foster better bilateral relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that deviations from established Chinese patrolling patterns have led to disturbances at the border, reflecting a long-standing issue in India-China relations.
The MEA's spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, noted that the situation at the India-China border can become volatile when Chinese forces diverge from their usual patrolling routes. While the MEA did not delve into specifics regarding the latest confrontations, it pointed to ongoing diplomatic and military dialogues aimed at resolving misunderstandings and preventing miscalculations along the LAC. The ITBP chief highlighted that his forces have been effectively managing these confrontations, which he described as continuing.
Kapur also addressed the need for India to bolster its drone and anti-drone capabilities, stating that traditional military resources are insufficient to counter the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which has significantly modernized its forces. He cited examples of smaller nations like Ukraine and Iran successfully leveraging drone technology against larger powers. The ITBP is reportedly allocating a substantial portion of its modernization budget to enhance its drone warfare capabilities, with plans to establish drone platoons across all border units.
The ongoing border tensions coincide with efforts to normalize relations between India and China, which have seen some progress following a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. During their discussions, Modi emphasized the importance of adhering to existing agreements regarding border issues. However, the Congress party has criticized the government for its handling of the situation, questioning whether the status quo prior to May 2020 has been restored in Ladakh and urging a transparent assessment of the current border situation.
As the situation evolves, the Indian government faces pressure to address these border tensions comprehensively. With ongoing military confrontations and political scrutiny, the focus remains on diplomatic efforts to stabilize relations with China while ensuring national security along the contested border regions.
