The Nifty 50 index also fell by 413.05 points, or 1.82%, settling around 22,190. This significant drop occurred amid a volatile trading week, marked by the weekly expiry of the Sensex.
The market's decline has resulted in a staggering loss of wealth for investors, totaling approximately Rs 10.52 lakh crore. The market capitalization of all BSE-listed companies decreased from Rs 4,72,35,273.39 crore at the previous day's close to Rs 4,61,83,659.33 crore. The broader market indices also mirrored this decline, with Nifty 100, Nifty 200, and Nifty 500 all recording losses, while mid- and small-cap indices experienced even steeper declines.
Sector-wise, the Nifty IT index was the only major sector to show positive movement, rising by 0.22%. In contrast, other sectors faced significant losses, with Nifty Metal dropping 3.21% and Nifty Realty declining 2.63%. The market breadth was heavily skewed towards declines, with a substantial number of stocks hitting their 52-week lows, indicating a challenging environment for investors.
Looking ahead, market analysts are closely monitoring economic indicators and potential policy changes that could influence market performance. Investors are advised to remain cautious and informed as the situation develops, with upcoming trading sessions expected to reflect ongoing volatility in the equity markets.
