An Indian-flagged cargo ship, Al Jusufi, was attacked near Oman, resulting in the death of one seafarer and the safety of 13 others.
The cargo vessel Al Jusufi was attacked by an unidentified aerial object off the coast of Oman.
Gandhar Nahim Ajij from Gujarat was identified as the deceased seafarer.
This incident raises the total number of Indian nationals killed in the West Asia conflict to 23.
An Indian-flagged cargo vessel, the Al Jusufi, was attacked on Monday while navigating near the coast of Oman, resulting in the death of one crew member. Union Minister of Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the incident, stating that the vessel was carrying 14 Indian seafarers at the time of the attack. The remaining 13 crew members were rescued by the Omani Coast Guard and are reported to be safe.
The deceased has been identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, a native of Gujarat. Minister Sonowal expressed condolences and emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian seafarers. The attack is part of a concerning trend, as India has seen an increase in incidents involving Indian nationals in the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has now claimed the lives of at least 23 Indians.
In response to the attack, the Indian embassy in Oman is coordinating with local authorities to provide assistance to the survivors. The Ministry of External Affairs is also working on the repatriation of the surviving crew and the remains of the deceased. This incident highlights the dangers faced by Indian seafarers in volatile regions, especially given the recent escalation of conflicts in West Asia.
The attack on the Al Jusufi is not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, a Panama-flagged oil tanker with 27 Indian crew members was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, and two other vessels with Indian crews were also attacked. Since the onset of the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs has reported that at least 22 Indians have lost their lives in similar attacks.
Looking ahead, the Indian government is expected to issue a statement regarding the latest attack, and officials are likely to continue monitoring the safety of Indian vessels in the region. The ongoing conflict necessitates a collective international effort to ensure the security of maritime operations and protect seafarers from such threats.
