On October 27, 2023, the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force announced plans to place orders for approximately 200 indigenous Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to modernize the military's aging fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which are crucial for various operational roles.

The requirement for new helicopters stems from the need to replace around 400 outdated Cheetah and Chetak helicopters currently in service. The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the procurement of 200 Light Multirole Helicopters (LMRH), which will be built in India, with Indian companies leading the production. This move is expected to significantly enhance the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem and support local industries.

HAL has already produced 12 LUH helicopters, with plans for an additional 187 units, bringing the total to 199. The estimated value of this project exceeds ₹20,000 crore. The LUH is designed to operate in high-altitude conditions, featuring a glass cockpit, a single turbo shaft engine, and capabilities for a maximum speed of 220 km/h, a service ceiling of 6.5 km, and a range of 350 km with a payload of 500 kg.

The introduction of these helicopters is anticipated to have a substantial impact on the Indian military's operational capabilities, particularly in reconnaissance and surveillance missions across various terrains, from the northern Siachen region to the northeastern states. The Indian Navy is also in the process of acquiring light maritime helicopters for search and rescue operations, indicating a comprehensive approach to enhancing aerial capabilities across all branches of the armed forces.

Moving forward, the Indian Army and Air Force are expected to finalize contracts with major players such as Tata, which is collaborating with Airbus, and Adani Group, partnering with Italy's Leonardo. The procurement process is set to unfold in the coming months, with a focus on integrating both public and private sector contributions to meet the military's needs effectively.
