India has expressed strong condemnation following an attack on the Panama-flagged merchant vessel, MT On Peace, which occurred early Tuesday in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident resulted in injuries to 11 Indian crew members among the 19 aboard the vessel. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the vessel was struck by a projectile while transiting the region, a critical maritime route.
The attack has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping in international waters. The Ministry stated that with the help of Omani authorities, the injured crew members were evacuated and are currently receiving medical care in Khasab, Oman. The Indian government has expressed gratitude to Oman for their prompt assistance in this matter.
In its official statement, India reiterated its call for an immediate cessation of all attacks on merchant vessels, emphasizing that such incidents pose a threat to regional peace and stability. The Ministry highlighted the ongoing risks faced by seafarers and the need for safe navigation through international waterways, urging for the restoration of commerce and security in the region.
This incident is part of a broader context of escalating tensions in West Asia, where attacks on shipping have become increasingly frequent. Eleven Indian seafarers have already lost their lives in the ongoing conflict, which has been exacerbated by military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iran. Additionally, five Indian seafarers have died in separate incidents in the Black Sea, underscoring the perilous environment for maritime operations.
Looking ahead, India is likely to continue diplomatic efforts to address the security challenges in the region. The government is expected to engage with international partners to enhance maritime security and ensure the safety of its citizens working overseas. As tensions persist, the focus will remain on preventing further attacks and safeguarding the lives of seafarers in international waters.
