The INDIA bloc is preparing to conduct a public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, scheduled for 4 PM on Friday at the official residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi. This event will be presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, with Kharge moving the motion and Rahul Gandhi concluding the discussion before a vote takes place.
The decision to hold this public impeachment was finalized during a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders at Kharge's residence on Thursday. Key figures present included Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, and K C Venugopal, alongside other prominent leaders from various parties such as CPM, Trinamool Congress, and the Samajwadi Party.
Sources indicate that approximately 30 speakers, representing 21 different political parties, are expected to participate in the proceedings. An invitation has also been extended to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), although their participation remains unconfirmed at this time. The event aims to address concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has faced criticism from various quarters.
In addition to political leaders, civil society representatives and individuals affected by the SIR will share their experiences during the impeachment. This symbolic act is strategically timed ahead of the Opposition's planned rally in Delhi on November 1, which will focus on allegations of “vote theft” and the implications of the SIR exercise.
As the INDIA bloc gears up for this significant event, it highlights the growing tensions between the opposition and the electoral commission. The outcome of this public impeachment could have lasting implications for the political landscape in India as the opposition seeks to rally support against perceived electoral injustices.
