In a bold move, the INDIA bloc has scheduled a mock Parliament session for October 30, 2023, as part of its ongoing protest against alleged electoral fraud, dubbed 'vote chori'. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the initiative, asserting that a sustained struggle is essential for awakening the electorate in a democratic society. The bloc plans to rally on November 1, with participants expected from various regions of the country.
The decision to hold the mock session at Kharge's residence comes after the Delhi Police denied permission for the Ashoka Hotel venue. Kharge expressed his determination to continue the fight against what he describes as mischief by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. "Our protest continues because of this Vote Chori and the mischief that CEC Gyanesh Kumar has done within the Commission," Kharge stated, emphasizing the importance of active participation in democracy.
Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed criticized the police's refusal, stating, "Why can't we do that? Gyanesh Kumar is a thief, and we will teach this thief a lesson." The mock Parliament aims to highlight the coalition's grievances and will feature a structured impeachment process, with former Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar presiding over the proceedings. CPI(M) MP John Brittas noted that this session would serve as a reflection of the people's aspirations for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
The implications of this protest extend beyond the immediate political landscape, as it seeks to engage citizens in discussions about electoral integrity and accountability. The INDIA bloc's actions may resonate with voters who feel disenfranchised and could influence public perception of the Election Commission's credibility.
Looking ahead, the INDIA bloc's activities on October 30 and November 1 are expected to draw significant attention. The coalition aims to mobilize support and raise awareness about their concerns regarding electoral processes, potentially shaping the narrative leading up to future elections.
