In a bold political move, the Congress-led INDIA bloc organized a mock impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 31, 2026, in New Delhi. The event was framed as a public demonstration against what the bloc termed as the illegitimacy of the BJP-led NDA government, which they allege has manipulated recent elections. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, initiated the motion, while former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over the proceedings, designed to mimic the actual workings of Parliament.
The mock session took place in a setting reminiscent of the old Parliament's Central Hall, with Kharge asserting that Gyanesh Kumar should not only be removed from office but also face charges of treason. This theatrical display was part of a broader strategy by the opposition, which is gearing up for a significant rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on November 1, aimed at consolidating support against the ruling government.
During the proceedings, Kharge articulated the INDIA bloc's concerns, emphasizing the alleged threats to the electoral process and democracy itself. He accused the Chief Election Commissioner of acting under the directives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that the integrity of the electoral system is under siege. He outlined six specific charges against Kumar, including conspiracy to manipulate elections and the deletion of millions of voters from electoral rolls.
The event drew reactions from the BJP, with spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan dismissing the mock impeachment as a mere attempt to mislead the public. He criticized Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, for failing to win elections and suggested that the mock parliament was a misguided effort to create confusion. The BJP has consistently maintained that it is open to discussing electoral reforms in the actual Parliament, challenging the opposition to engage in genuine debate rather than staging symbolic acts.
Looking ahead, the INDIA bloc's rally on November 1 is expected to amplify their demands for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and the restoration of the electoral rolls prior to the recent changes that have reportedly affected around 13 crore voters. As the political landscape heats up, the opposition's strategy will likely focus on mobilizing public sentiment against the current government, with the mock impeachment serving as a focal point for their ongoing campaign against perceived electoral injustices.
