In a significant address at the United Nations General Assembly, India firmly warned Pakistan against the use of nuclear weapons as a means of political pressure. During the First Committee session focused on disarmament and international security, India's Senior Adviser on Disarmament, Anmol Sher Singh Bedi, stated that New Delhi would not succumb to nuclear blackmail, asserting that any terrorist actions against India would elicit a strong and appropriate response.

Bedi's remarks came in response to Pakistan's claims regarding Jammu and Kashmir, which India regards as an integral part of its territory. He reiterated that India's military capabilities are defensive and shaped by its security environment, rather than aimed at any specific nation. He expressed concern that treating nuclear weapons as routine instruments could escalate tensions rather than promote restraint, highlighting the risks associated with relying on nuclear threats to justify actions below conventional warfare thresholds.

India's position on terrorism was made clear, with Bedi outlining three guiding principles for the country's response to threats: any terrorist attack will be met with a fitting response, India will not yield to nuclear coercion, and there will be no distinction between those who sponsor terrorism and those who execute it. He referenced India's military actions in May 2025, which were a response to a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 civilians, primarily tourists. These actions were described as measured and targeted, aimed at minimizing escalation.

Additionally, India raised concerns regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, emphasizing that mutual trust and cooperation are essential for the agreement's viability. Bedi stated that India would suspend the treaty until Pakistan effectively and permanently halts its support for terrorism. He also addressed the issue of nuclear proliferation, referencing the legacy of Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and the international proliferation network linked to him, which has raised global security concerns and led to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1540.

Looking ahead, India calls for heightened vigilance from all nations regarding nuclear cooperation and the transfer of military capabilities, stressing that this is crucial not only for India but for global security. The ongoing situation highlights the need for responsible actions and accountability in international relations, particularly concerning nuclear weapons and terrorism.
