The Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) has unveiled a draft aimed at reforming its approach to handling cheating incidents during examinations, a move prompted by the recent suicide of student Sahil Wakode. The proposed regulations stipulate that students accused of using unfair means will first have the opportunity to explain their actions before any disciplinary measures are enacted.

Historically, IIT Bombay's disciplinary process initiated immediate action upon detection of cheating. However, the new draft seeks to establish a more transparent procedure, allowing students to articulate their side of the story, which is a significant shift in the institution's approach to such serious allegations.

The changes come in the wake of intense scrutiny surrounding the circumstances of Wakode's death. The 22-year-old was found dead in his hostel room shortly after being caught using a mobile phone and ChatGPT during a mid-semester exam. This incident has ignited widespread protests on campus, with many students and faculty questioning the existing examination protocols and the treatment of students accused of misconduct.

In support of the exam invigilator, Suryanarayana Doolla, the IIT Bombay Faculty Forum emphasized that he was adhering to the established protocols when he confronted Wakode about his smartphone usage. CCTV footage revealed the moment Doolla approached Wakode, who was seated in the front row, and subsequently handed over his phone. The footage shows an extended conversation between the two before Wakode left the examination hall.

Despite the ongoing investigations, allegations of institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination against Wakode have surfaced, with his family and protesters claiming these factors contributed to his tragic decision to end his life. While initial inquiries have not established a direct link between faculty actions and the suicide, the investigation remains open as authorities continue to review all relevant evidence.
