In a significant address following his appointment, Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit outlined the Indian Air Force's (IAF) key priorities, emphasizing the urgent need for the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA Mk-1A) and advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA). Dixit, who took over as the 29th IAF chief, highlighted that restoring the IAF's combat capabilities through indigenization is his foremost task as the force grapples with a critical shortage of fighter jets.

Dixit's remarks come at a time when the IAF is facing challenges in maintaining its sanctioned strength of 42.5 squadrons, with current numbers falling below 30. He stated, "The Tejas Mk-1A and Mk-2, AMCA, and Indian weapons and sensors are our highest priority. We will fight with Indian solutions, and we will hold them in numbers that meet our operational demands." This commitment to indigenization aims to enhance the IAF's self-reliance and operational efficiency.

The new chief's vision, encapsulated in the acronym “VAYU,” emphasizes vigilance, self-reliance, ingenuity, and unity of effort. He stressed the importance of readiness across all units, asserting that every squadron and air warrior must be prepared to respond swiftly. The IAF is banking on the timely induction of new aircraft, including 114 additional Rafales and the LCA Mk-1A, to bolster its fleet and combat capabilities.

Dixit also pointed out the need for innovation in various operational aspects, including command and control systems, counter-drone defenses, and maintenance protocols. He underscored the significance of integrated operations with the army and navy, stating that effective air power is achieved through cohesive planning and execution. The IAF's modernization efforts are crucial, especially in light of evolving security threats and advancements in military technology.

Looking ahead, Dixit aims to expedite the operationalization of the LCA Mk-1A, which is nearing induction after several delays. This aircraft will replace the aging MiG-21s, which have been in service for over six decades. The IAF has placed substantial orders with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 180 Mk-1A jets, valued at approximately ₹1.1 lakh crore. Additionally, the advancement of the LCA Mk-2 and AMCA programs is critical, particularly as regional adversaries enhance their air capabilities. The IAF is poised to take significant steps in modernizing its fleet under Dixit's leadership.
