On a recent flydubai flight FZ1073, Israeli dentist Shota Musaev transformed from a regular passenger into a lifesaver when he intervened during a violent incident that left the pilot, Smit Machchhar, critically injured. The flight, which was headed to Tel Aviv, was diverted to Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot attempted to hijack the aircraft, endangering the lives of more than 170 passengers.
The situation escalated when the co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, attacked Machchhar with an emergency axe, causing severe injuries including a skull fracture and deep lacerations. Musaev, the only medical professional on board, quickly rushed to the cockpit after hearing screams, where he found the pilot bleeding profusely. He immediately began applying makeshift pressure dressings and ice packs to stabilize Machchhar's condition.
Musaev recounted his experience, stating, "I saw one pilot on the floor, with...blood." He utilized T-shirts to apply pressure to the wounds and requested ice from the flight attendants to help manage the bleeding. Despite the chaos, he maintained communication with Machchhar, reassuring him and keeping him conscious during the critical moments. Musaev's determination was evident as he continuously monitored the pilot's vital signs, ensuring he remained alert and responsive.
The incident not only highlighted Musaev's quick thinking but also the collective effort of other passengers, including Yaniv Hayun, who helped subdue the attacker and stabilize the aircraft. Once the plane landed in Saudi Arabia, Musaev handed Machchhar over to medical personnel, wishing him well with a heartfelt farewell. The Indian Embassy in the UAE has since reported that Machchhar is making steady progress in his recovery.
As the story unfolds, the actions of Musaev and the other passengers have sparked discussions around emergency preparedness and the importance of having trained individuals on flights. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of air travel and the critical role that quick thinking and teamwork can play in life-threatening situations.
