In a dramatic turn of events, Ghanakanta Gogoi, a businessman implicated in the shooting deaths of five individuals near a hotel in Guwahati, was killed in a police encounter early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred as Gogoi was being transported from Guwahati to Sibsagar, approximately 350 kilometers away, in connection with a separate case.
According to police reports, Gogoi attempted to escape while the transport team was at Gaurisagar around 3:12 AM. He requested to step out of the vehicle under the pretense of needing to answer nature's call. Once outside, he allegedly tried to seize the weapon of the investigating officer, leading to a physical struggle. In the ensuing chaos, another officer discharged his firearm, resulting in Gogoi sustaining fatal injuries.
Gogoi had been in police custody since his arrest on October 26, following the shooting incident that left five individuals dead, including hotel owner Helena Bharali. The shooting was reportedly triggered by a dispute over the lease of Hotel Bilas Inn. While five victims died at the scene, one individual survived the attack. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has raised significant public concern.
The aftermath of the shooting has seen family members of the deceased demanding immediate justice, criticizing the legal process that would allow Gogoi to be tried in court. Following these demands, a district court in Kamrup Metro instructed that Gogoi not be taken out of jail after sunset, emphasizing the need for his safety while in custody. Police officials stated that they were taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their team during the transfer, but the situation escalated unexpectedly.
Looking ahead, the police are expected to continue their investigation into the shooting incident and the circumstances leading to Gogoi's death. The case has drawn significant media attention and public scrutiny, prompting discussions about the adequacy of legal protections for both victims and accused individuals in such violent cases.
