In a significant development for air travel in Mumbai, the Civil Aviation Ministry has instructed Adani Airports to delay the planned partial relocation of international flight operations from Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport. This decision comes as airlines have expressed strong opposition to the proposed changes, which were set to take effect by October 25.

Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), which manages both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports, had initially aimed to shift 33% of international flights to the new facility to facilitate renovations at Mumbai Airport's Terminal 1. However, the ministry's intervention indicates a need for further discussions to ensure a smooth transition.

On Tuesday, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha convened a meeting in New Delhi with representatives from various airlines, AAHL, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). During this meeting, the secretary proposed postponing the transition by several weeks and requested a comprehensive plan from both airlines and AAHL regarding the operational shift to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The discussions highlighted AAHL's readiness to accommodate up to 5 million international passengers annually at the newly established Navi Mumbai facility. Key infrastructure and passenger amenities, such as enhanced airport connectivity, in-flight catering, hotels, and lounges, were also discussed as part of the airport's preparedness. The meeting lasted approximately 90 minutes, focusing on addressing operational concerns raised by airlines and clarifying details about the redevelopment plan.

Looking ahead, further discussions are scheduled for October 13 to refine the transition plan, followed by another meeting on October 20 to finalize the operational details. All stakeholders involved have expressed their commitment to ensuring that the transition is executed smoothly, prioritizing passenger convenience and operational efficiency throughout the process.
