Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, former Tamil Nadu Education Minister, arrested for alleged ₹100 crore bribery.
Investigation revealed 177 private schools involved in the corruption scheme.
Mahesh denies allegations, claiming political targeting by the ruling government.
Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the former School Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, was arrested by the Chennai Police's Central Crime Branch (CCB) due to his alleged involvement in a ₹100 crore bribery case. This case centers around the granting of licenses and approvals to private educational institutions, with the arrest occurring after a thorough investigation into the matter.
The inquiry was initiated following a complaint from Ilangovan, the secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu. He alleged that substantial sums were collected from private schools under the pretense of securing necessary government approvals, including permanent recognition and other regulatory permissions. Investigators have identified 177 schools that may have been affected by this alleged scheme.
Evidence collected during the investigation, including digital materials and testimonies from various individuals, led to Mahesh being named as a key suspect. The police have invoked the Prevention of Corruption Act against him. Despite these serious allegations, Mahesh has denied any wrongdoing and has challenged the legitimacy of the case, asserting that it is politically motivated.
The political landscape has intensified as the DMK party, to which Mahesh belongs, accused the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of misusing investigative agencies to target political adversaries. This arrest follows the dismissal of Mahesh's anticipatory bail petition by the Madras High Court, which rejected his request for protection against arrest.
Looking ahead, Mahesh has taken further legal action by seeking to quash the FIR filed against him. The ongoing developments in this case will be closely monitored, as they could have significant implications for the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu and the operations of private educational institutions in the state.
