The co-pilot planned to cause mass casualties by crashing the aircraft.
Passengers and crew successfully subdued the attacker during the incident.
Israeli leaders commend the bravery of those who thwarted the hijacking attempt.
On September 30, a serious incident unfolded aboard a Flydubai flight when the Omani co-pilot attempted to attack the captain with an axe, intending to crash the aircraft into Tel Aviv's international airport. This revelation comes from the United Arab Emirates' chief prosecutor, who stated that the co-pilot was motivated by the infamous September 11 attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda in 2001, aiming to inflict maximum casualties.
Prior to this incident, the co-pilot had been prohibited from flying in Oman due to his extremist views. Despite this, he met all professional and security criteria necessary for his role, including possessing a valid pilot's license and passing required background checks. The attack occurred when the aircraft suddenly dropped approximately 5,000 meters, prompting passengers to rush to the cockpit in a desperate attempt to regain control.
During the struggle, the Indian captain sustained injuries but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to restrain the co-pilot. Following this intervention, the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Notably, most passengers on board were Israeli nationals, which heightened the stakes of the situation.
In response to the attempted hijacking, Israeli President Isaac Herzog awarded six civilians with the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for their critical role in preventing the attack. Herzog emphasized the need for comprehensive answers regarding the incident, stating, "Everyone, all of us, deserves clear and satisfactory answers." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the actions of the passengers and the pilot, announcing a thorough review of security measures for foreign civil aviation to Israel.
As investigations continue, the implications of this incident are significant, raising concerns about aviation security and the potential for extremist actions in the region. Authorities are expected to implement stricter security protocols to prevent similar threats in the future, ensuring the safety of passengers traveling to and from Israel.
