A serious accident involving five vehicles from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's convoy occurred on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in several injuries. The incident took place near Haliyapur, approximately 100 kilometers from Lucknow, the state capital. Fortunately, Gandhi was unharmed during the collision, which involved an ambulance and several other vehicles in the convoy.
According to police reports, the vehicles that collided were positioned at the rear of the convoy. The injured individuals include both party workers and security personnel. CCTV footage from the scene depicted the ambulance occupying the right fast lane while multiple vehicles were congested in other lanes. A Scorpio SUV, which appeared to have sustained significant damage, was seen stopped in front of the ambulance following the impact.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi had arrived at Lucknow airport and was heading towards Sultanpur, located about 135 kilometers away. The accident occurred roughly 35 kilometers from their intended destination. Gandhi was scheduled to appear in a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur concerning a defamation case related to comments he made about Amit Shah, the former BJP chief.
The defamation case stems from an incident on August 4, 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra lodged a complaint against Gandhi for remarks made during a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. The court was expected to deliver its verdict today, necessitating Gandhi's physical presence for the judgment announcement.
As the situation unfolds, the Congress party is likely to address the implications of this incident, particularly regarding Gandhi's upcoming court appearance. The party's leadership may also evaluate the safety protocols in place for high-profile figures during travel, especially in light of this accident.
