The sports complex's closure has raised concerns over its operational significance and personnel welfare.
On October 26, just days before his retirement on October 31, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh sent a letter to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, urging the government to preserve the Indian Air Force's (IAF) control over a significant sports complex located at the Race Course Air Force Station in New Delhi. This appeal comes as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has initiated steps to reclaim the sprawling land, which has sparked controversy within defense circles.
The Air Force Sports Complex, established in the 1940s, has been closed to IAF members since last month due to the government's land reclamation efforts. This complex is not only a recreational facility but also plays a crucial role in supporting the operational needs of the IAF, housing various amenities for personnel. Singh's letter emphasized the importance of the complex for training and morale, highlighting its multifaceted role in supporting over 5,000 personnel stationed there.
The land in question spans approximately 40 acres and includes facilities such as a golf course, swimming pool, fitness center, and accommodation for both married and unmarried personnel. Singh's request to reconsider the land transfer aligns with the IAF's operational imperatives, especially as the Race Course station is tasked with countering unmanned aerial system threats. Despite the significance of this facility, MoHUA has not publicly clarified the rationale behind its reclamation efforts.
The abrupt closure of the sports complex led to the cancellation of Singh's farewell golf event, raising questions about the timing of the government's actions. The Defence Ministry has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter. The ongoing reclamation efforts are part of a broader initiative by MoHUA to reclaim land around the Prime Minister's residence, which has included other notable sites such as the Gymkhana Club.
Looking ahead, Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, who recently took over as the new IAF chief, is expected to address the concerns raised by Singh. Dixit has publicly committed to prioritizing the welfare and operational readiness of IAF personnel, indicating that this issue may receive further attention in the coming days as the IAF navigates its future amidst these developments.
