Delhi Police clarify their actions after a video showing officers wearing shoes at Bangla Sahib surfaces online, alleging malicious intent behind its circulation.
Delhi Police clarify that officers were in a common passage before entering the Gurdwara.
Legal action is being pursued against those spreading the video, deemed to have malicious intent.
The incident coincided with a significant protest in the area, leading to heightened police presence.
The Delhi Police issued a statement on Saturday addressing a video that circulated on social media, showing police officers allegedly wearing shoes while on the premises of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. The police clarified that the officers were walking through a common passage utilized by all devotees to access the Gurdwara's entry point, emphasizing that this area is not part of the sacred space where shoes are prohibited.
In their statement, the Delhi Police shared that the video depicted the pathway leading to the designated area where visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the Gurdwara. They reiterated that the same protocol applies to all visitors, and the video was intended to misrepresent the actions of the police officers involved.
The police further accused those disseminating the video of having "malicious intent," suggesting that it was aimed at inciting outrage among the religious community. Legal measures are being initiated against individuals responsible for sharing the video, which the police believe misrepresents the situation.
This incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the area, as Delhi Police had deployed significant resources in response to an anti-CEC protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party on October 10. Over 40,000 personnel from the Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces were mobilized, leading to the detention of more than 4,000 individuals involved in the protests. Notably, Yashaswinee Raje Singh, daughter of a former BJP MLA, reported her detention near Bangla Sahib while participating in the protests.
Looking ahead, the Delhi Police are expected to continue monitoring the situation closely, particularly as protests related to the electoral commission's actions unfold. The legal actions against those spreading the video may also serve as a deterrent against further misinformation, as the police aim to maintain order and respect for religious sentiments in the community.
