AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, have condemned the incident and called for Verma's arrest.
Verma claims he was provoked by abusive remarks directed at his family.
In a controversial incident on Sunday, Delhi's Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma allegedly slapped a member of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) social media team during a road inspection in Tilak Nagar. The altercation occurred when the individual attempted to record a video of the minister inspecting the road, which has been under construction for several days. A video of the incident quickly circulated on social media, drawing significant public attention and outrage.
The incident unfolded in the afternoon, with AAP leaders, including party convener Arvind Kejriwal and local MLA Jarnail Singh, vocally condemning Verma's actions. Kejriwal demanded the minister's arrest, stating that such behavior reflects a growing arrogance among BJP leaders who no longer fear voter backlash. Rahul Gandhi also criticized Verma, suggesting that the incident illustrates the BJP's disregard for accountability.
In response to the backlash, Verma released a video claiming that AAP workers had been verbally abusive towards his family during the inspection. He stated, "What happened should not have happened," while alleging that Jarnail Singh had arrived with his supporters and instigated the confrontation. Verma insisted that his primary goal was to oversee development work and that he would not tolerate any obstruction.
The incident has sparked discussions about the broader implications for governance and accountability in Delhi. AAP leaders have framed the altercation as indicative of a larger struggle between the ruling BJP and the younger generation demanding transparency and responsibility from their leaders. Jarnail Singh emphasized that Verma's reaction was unwarranted, given that he was simply pointing out the poor condition of the roads during the inspection.
Looking ahead, AAP's Arvind Kejriwal announced plans to visit Tilak Nagar to personally inspect the road in question. The incident has raised questions about the conduct of public officials and the need for accountability in government projects, as well as the ongoing tensions between political parties in Delhi. As of now, no formal complaint has been filed with the police regarding the incident, but the situation continues to develop, with potential repercussions for Verma and the BJP government in Delhi.
