Delhi Court Issues New Bailable Warrants for Dhruv Rathee

A Delhi court has issued new bailable warrants against YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in connection with a defamation case dating back to 2018. The warrants were issued on Saturday by Judicial Magistrate Rahul Jain after the complainant, Vikas Sanskrityayan, also known as Vikas Pandey, alleged that Rathee defamed him through a video posted on his YouTube channel. The court is currently awaiting a detailed order regarding this matter.
The issuance of these warrants follows a previous attempt on October 17, when the court had also issued bailable warrants against Rathee after a process server reported that his residence was locked, preventing the delivery of the notice. In addition to the warrants, the court has sent fresh summons to Rathee at his address in Gurugram, Haryana.
During the court proceedings, advocate Samaksh Sharma, representing Pandey, informed the court that Rathee typically resides in Austria but had returned to India to participate in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in Delhi. The court noted that Rathee was first summoned in this defamation case back in July 2019, indicating the protracted nature of the legal proceedings.
The defamation complaint was filed by Pandey in 2018 after Rathee uploaded a video that allegedly contained defamatory content about him. This case highlights the ongoing tensions between public figures and content creators, raising questions about the limits of free speech and the responsibilities that come with it in the digital age.
