The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 26. This developing weather system is projected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28, bringing with it wind speeds of 115 to 125 km/h, potentially gusting up to 140 km/h.
In the lead-up to the storm, heavy rainfall has already been reported across several regions, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. The IMD recorded significant rainfall amounts, with some areas experiencing 12-20 cm of rain within 24 hours. This has led to waterlogging and disruptions in various districts, prompting local authorities to issue alerts and take preventive measures.
As the cyclonic storm approaches, the IMD has issued red and orange alerts in multiple districts, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has convened a meeting to review preparedness measures, advising residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea.
The impending storm is expected to have broader implications, affecting not only the immediate coastal areas but also regions further inland. The IMD forecasts that parts of West Bengal will experience heavy rainfall from October 28 to 30, with squally winds anticipated along the coast. This has raised concerns about potential flooding and infrastructure damage in affected areas.
Looking ahead, the IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected as the storm develops. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay informed and heed warnings from local authorities as the weather system approaches, ensuring safety and preparedness in the face of potential hazards.
