Critics urge accountability and question the government's diplomatic approach towards China.
On Friday, the Congress party publicly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for its perceived inaction regarding reported confrontations between Indian and Chinese forces in Arunachal Pradesh. The party's leaders demanded transparency and accountability concerning India's border security and diplomatic strategies with China, especially following alarming statements from the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Shatrujeet Kapoor, regarding recent skirmishes with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
The backdrop of this political confrontation stems from ongoing tensions along the India-China border, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh. Reports indicate that Chinese forces have been deviating from established patrolling routes, which has led to increased confrontations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) acknowledged these issues but emphasized that both nations are utilizing diplomatic and military channels to manage and resolve disputes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge spearheaded the criticism, questioning the government's handling of national security and the implications of India's growing economic reliance on China. He highlighted the alarming nature of the ITBP DG's confirmation regarding PLA face-offs, drawing parallels to previous confrontations in Doklam and Galwan. Kharge pointed out that despite ongoing talks, confrontations persist, raising concerns about the effectiveness of India's border management strategies.
The implications of these confrontations extend beyond immediate security concerns. Congress leaders have expressed worries about the rising trade deficit with China, which has reportedly surged since the Galwan incident. They argue that the government's concessions to China compromise India's strategic interests, particularly in light of recent developments such as China's renaming of locations in Arunachal Pradesh and significant infrastructure projects on the Brahmaputra River.
Looking ahead, the Congress party is calling for a more robust response from the government, urging it to prioritize national security over diplomatic gestures. As the situation evolves, the party is likely to continue pressing for answers and accountability from the Modi administration, particularly as the public remains concerned about the implications of these border tensions on India's sovereignty and security.
