The Congress party has responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent accusations that it has attempted to sideline Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. During an event in New Delhi marking Patel's 151st birth anniversary, Shah claimed that the Congress has historically neglected Patel's contributions to India's national integration. In a strong rebuttal, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid stated that the party holds Patel in high regard and recognizes his vital role in shaping the nation.
Khurshid articulated the Congress's position, asserting that Sardar Patel deserves respect comparable to any other prominent leader in Indian history. He expressed confusion over Shah's remarks, suggesting that such statements only serve to tarnish Patel's image rather than honor it. "We are deeply committed to the vision and actions of Sardar Patel, as he intended," Khurshid remarked, emphasizing the party's dedication to preserving Patel's legacy.
In his address, Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring Patel's legacy through the construction of the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, which he described as the tallest statue in the world. Shah highlighted Patel's significant role in integrating princely states into the Indian Union, asserting that Patel achieved what many leaders could not accomplish in their lifetimes within a mere 1,218 days. This assertion underscores Patel's pivotal role in establishing a unified India.
On the occasion of Patel's birth anniversary, Prime Minister Modi paid floral tributes at the Statue of Unity, which is located in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. The day is recognized nationwide as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), celebrating Patel's contributions to national unity post-Independence. Patel's efforts in unifying various princely states earned him the title of the Iron Man of India, a legacy that continues to resonate in contemporary discussions about national integration.
Looking ahead, the Congress party plans to continue advocating for the recognition of Patel's contributions while addressing the ongoing political discourse surrounding his legacy. As political leaders reflect on Patel's impact, the dialogue around his role in India's history is expected to remain a focal point in upcoming political discussions and commemorations.
