The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Rahul Gandhi of attempting to create divisions within India on linguistic lines. This accusation came after Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a "full-scale attack" on the Tamil language and its culture. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi responded by asserting that the Tamil language has been honored during Modi's administration, highlighting the Prime Minister's recognition of it as one of the world's oldest languages and his efforts to promote its culture internationally.
Trivedi emphasized that the Modi government has made significant strides in elevating the Tamil language both nationally and globally. He pointed out that the sacred Sengol, a symbol of Tamil culture, was placed in the new Parliament building in 2023, a move that the Congress party opposed. He also noted that Modi recently presented a Russian translation of the 'Thirukkural' to President Vladimir Putin, further showcasing the government's commitment to Tamil heritage.
In addition to the linguistic debate, Trivedi criticized Gandhi for his remarks regarding an "undeclared Emergency" under Modi's rule, arguing that current freedoms allow for open criticism of the Prime Minister. He contrasted this with the past, where dissent against the Indira Gandhi government could lead to imprisonment.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj also weighed in, questioning the Congress party's inaction regarding JNU professor Angomcha Akoijam, who was dismissed over sexual harassment allegations. Swaraj challenged Gandhi to demonstrate that his party's commitment to women's respect is more than just a slogan, urging him to take decisive action against Akoijam.
The ongoing exchanges between the BJP and Congress highlight the intense political climate in India, particularly regarding cultural and linguistic identities. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of these accusations may resonate with voters in the upcoming elections, prompting both parties to clarify their positions on cultural respect and accountability within their ranks.
