A photograph from 1985 has recently gained popularity, showcasing two young officers who graduated from India's National Defence Academy (NDA) and are now leading the country's military forces. General Dhiraj Seth, the current Army chief, and Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the incoming chief of the Indian Air Force, were part of the 69th course at the NDA, marking a significant milestone in their careers that began over four decades ago.
The image captures the moment these young cadets completed their training at the NDA in December 1985, at an age when few could predict their future trajectories. Today, General Seth commands the Indian Army, while Air Marshal Dixit is set to take over the Air Force leadership, a remarkable achievement reflecting their enduring friendship and commitment to service.
General Seth officially became the 31st chief of the Indian Army on June 30, 2026. Air Marshal Dixit is scheduled to succeed Air Chief Marshal AP Singh as the Air Force chief on October 31, 2026. This unprecedented occurrence marks the first time in military history that two individuals from the same NDA course and squadron are simultaneously appointed to the highest ranks of the Army and Air Force.
Air Marshal Dixit has an extensive background as a fighter pilot, with over 3,500 hours of flight experience on various aircraft, including the Mirage-2000 and MiG. His military career includes participation in key operations like 'Operation Safed Sagar' and 'Operation Rakshak', along with senior roles such as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command.
General Seth's leadership experience spans various command roles, including armoured regiments and counter-insurgency forces. Before his current position, he led the South Western Command and served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. Their rise to leadership not only highlights their individual accomplishments but also signifies a historic moment for the Indian military, inspiring future generations of cadets at the NDA.
