In a tragic incident in Kochi, a 17-year-old boy, the son of a local judge, was involved in a fatal accident early Sunday morning. The accident occurred around 2:20 AM near a Ford showroom on Container Road in Cheranalloor, resulting in the death of 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan, who was riding a scooter at the time.
The teenager, who resides in Aluva, allegedly took the Mercedes-Benz registered in his father's name without permission. Reports indicate that he was driving alone from Vallarpadam towards Kalamassery when his vehicle collided with Jayabalakrishnan's scooter, which was traveling in the same direction. According to police statements, the teenager claimed that rain caused Jayabalakrishnan to change direction suddenly to avoid waterlogging, making the collision unavoidable.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the impact, but Jayabalakrishnan succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The police apprehended the teenager and seized the vehicle, initiating a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, addressing reckless driving and causing death by negligence. The victim's body was sent to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kalamassery for a postmortem.
This accident follows another recent tragedy in Kochi, where a Mini Cooper crash resulted in the deaths of three individuals on October 11. Investigators revealed that the Mini Cooper was traveling at high speeds, exceeding 160 km/h, at the time of the collision. This pattern of luxury vehicle-related accidents raises concerns about road safety in the area.
As investigations continue, police are examining witness statements and reviewing CCTV footage to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident. The community is left mourning the loss of Jayabalakrishnan, who was returning home after closing his eatery near a local temple when the incident occurred. His niece expressed the severity of the impact, noting that the car came to a stop over half a kilometer away from the accident site.
