Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat Contribute 45% to India's Rooftop Solar Capacity
As of September 2026, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat collectively represent 45% of India's residential rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
India's rooftop solar capacity reached 17,561 MW by September 2026.
Uttar Pradesh led with 234.46 MW of installations in September.
Cumulative applications for rooftop solar exceeded 8.84 million.
India's residential rooftop solar capacity has reached 17,561 megawatts (MW) as of September 2026, covering nearly 5.95 million households under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY). The states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat have emerged as significant contributors, accounting for 45% of the total installed capacity, according to data from JMK Research & Analytics.
In September 2026, Uttar Pradesh led the way in monthly installations with 234.46 MW, followed closely by Maharashtra at 208.04 MW and Gujarat at 165.6 MW. The state of Uttar Pradesh received a total of 93,437 applications and completed 74,784 installations during the month. Maharashtra recorded 71,371 applications and 60,453 installations, while Gujarat had 152,642 applications with 45,221 installations completed, as per the PMSG: MBY portal data.
Uttar Pradesh's performance marks its highest monthly capacity addition for the third consecutive month, although the figure was lower than the 288 MW recorded in July. The monthly capacity addition in August was 228.95 MW, showing a gradual increase to 234.46 MW in September. However, overall monthly capacity additions across India have seen a decline for three straight months, dropping from 1,592 MW in July to 1,357.52 MW in September, reflecting a 2.2% decrease.
During September, states collectively received 602,376 applications against 357,100 installations. The cumulative figures now stand at 8,842,231 applications and 5,080,690 installations, bringing the total reported installed capacity to 17,794.16 MW. The subsidies disbursed to date amount to approximately Rs. 336.42 billion. Uttar Pradesh's cumulative capacity is 2,942.02 MW, while Maharashtra and Gujarat have 3,044.43 MW and 3,287.39 MW, respectively.
A report from the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association (ISMA) indicates that the adoption of rooftop solar is expanding beyond states with the most favorable project economics. It highlights that states with higher tariffs, like Maharashtra and Kerala, enjoy shorter payback periods, while states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu face longer payback periods due to lower tariffs. Approximately 60% of the capacity installed under the PMSG: MBY scheme is in regions where rooftop solar would not be cost-effective without policy support.
