Tukaram Mundhe, the Commissioner of the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has publicly denied reports suggesting his transfer from the agency. In a social media statement, he confirmed, "I continue to serve as Commissioner, FDA Maharashtra," emphasizing his ongoing commitment to combat unsafe food and substandard drugs.
This clarification comes shortly after the Maharashtra government appointed Mundhe to lead a committee tasked with investigating alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations. The committee was formed in response to a ten-day protest by MPSC aspirants, who halted their demonstrations following the announcement of the inquiry. MPSC Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar has taken a leave of absence until the investigation concludes.
The inquiry committee, under Mundhe's leadership, will include notable members such as former justice Dilip Bhosale, IPS officer Laxmi Gautam, ex-IAS officer Ganesh Patil, and retired justice P D Naik. Mundhe's proactive approach in addressing food safety issues has garnered significant public attention, with some media outlets dubbing him a 'Rock Star' of public service.
Mundhe has articulated that good governance transcends headlines, focusing instead on making a tangible difference in society. He stated, "Food safety is ultimately about protecting people, upholding standards and building public trust." His commitment to fair and consistent enforcement aims to enhance the credibility of institutions and foster public confidence in the system.
In addition to his current responsibilities, Mundhe announced the launch of the 'Eat Right' campaign aimed at promoting food safety and healthy eating habits among the public. This initiative will feature various programs, including 'Eat Right Schools' and 'Eat Right Places,' alongside digital campaigns designed to educate citizens about their food choices. Mundhe emphasized the importance of understanding what and how much to eat, stating, "Ultimately, it is not about regulation; it is about eating habits."
