ReNew Wind Energy Pvt Ltd has formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to establish a green data center park in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The project, valued at ₹70,000 crore (around $7.3 billion), is part of Maharashtra's broader ambitions to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

This initiative aligns with several recent agreements the state has made with various digital infrastructure providers, particularly in the MMR and Navi Mumbai areas. Notable collaborations include projects with Tillman Global Holdings, AirtTrunk, Tata Group, and Trentrar, all aimed at enhancing the region's digital capabilities and infrastructure.

The proposed data center park is set to have a capacity of 750 MW and will be located in an emerging data center corridor that includes Panvel, Khalapur, Taloja, and Bhokharpada. ReNew has emphasized that a key aspect of the project will be its commitment to sustainability, requiring at least 51% of its operational power to come from green sources. This initiative reflects a growing trend towards environmentally responsible energy use in the tech industry.

The MoU was signed by ReNew's state head and P. Anbalagan, the Principal Secretary of the Industries, Investment & Services Department, along with the CEO of Invest Maharashtra. The agreement outlines the state's role in facilitating necessary permits, registrations, and approvals, as well as providing fiscal incentives to support the project.

Looking ahead, the green data center park is expected to begin operations in 2028, marking a significant step in Maharashtra's journey towards becoming a leader in digital infrastructure and green energy solutions. This development is likely to attract further investments and enhance the state's position in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
