MUMBAI: A collaborative effort between the University of Mumbai and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) is set to establish a research centre aimed at bolstering disaster preparedness along Maharashtra's extensive 720-kilometer coastline. This initiative, announced recently, will prioritize the development of scientific solutions to address natural hazards such as tsunamis, storm surges, and rising sea levels.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Ravindra Kulkarni, emphasized that this partnership is particularly beneficial for coastal communities in areas like Mumbai, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Vengurla. By enhancing their ability to respond effectively to climate change and natural disasters, the collaboration seeks to mitigate disaster risks and improve response mechanisms.

On Friday, the two institutions formalized their partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to strengthen marine research, promote ocean-based technologies, and enhance the resilience of coastal areas. The collaboration will also involve the development of advanced ocean science services and joint research projects that support marine industries and the sustainable use of ocean resources.

The establishment of this research centre is expected to create new opportunities in marine science and technology within Maharashtra. By leveraging the academic and research strengths of the University of Mumbai alongside INCOIS’s expertise in ocean information services, the initiative aims to contribute significantly to coastal protection and sustainable marine resource management, aligning with India's broader Blue Economy goals.

Looking ahead, the partnership will focus on implementing effective measures to tackle emerging environmental challenges while fostering innovation in marine science. The research centre is anticipated to play a crucial role in enhancing the state's preparedness for natural disasters and promoting sustainable practices in the marine sector.
