The Maharashtra government has announced a new maritime development policy aimed at enhancing port infrastructure and coastal shipping. This initiative was revealed by Nitesh Rane, the State’s Minister for Fisheries and Port Development, during the FICCI Maritime India conference held in Mumbai on November 2, 2026.

Rane emphasized that the forthcoming policy will be the most investment-friendly to date, featuring a single-window clearance mechanism designed to streamline processes for investors. This strategic move is part of Maharashtra's efforts to compete with other coastal states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, which are also vying to develop their port facilities and attract shipbuilding industries.

In a significant development last month, the Maharashtra government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mazagon Dock for the establishment of a shipyard valued at ₹26,000 crore. This project is expected to bolster the state's maritime capabilities and create numerous job opportunities in the region.

The government is also focusing on attracting ancillary industries to create a robust maritime ecosystem. Rane noted that discussions are ongoing with Dutch companies regarding the development of minor ports, which could enhance the state's shipping capacity and operational efficiency. Additionally, a water transport system is being developed in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with plans for completion by 2028.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is poised to implement this policy, which could significantly reshape the maritime landscape of the state. Stakeholders are keenly awaiting further details on the policy's rollout and its potential impact on regional economic growth and maritime trade.
