About 75% of the village's 10,000 residents use unique vehicle numbers linked to family identity.
The tradition began in 1990 when a local farmer chose a specific number for his vehicle.

In the village of Prayag Chikhali, located in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, vehicle registration numbers have evolved into a symbol of family identity. With a population of approximately 10,000 and around 1,900 households, the practice of using unique numbers has been prevalent for over thirty years. According to village sarpanch Rohit Patil, about 75% of the residents have adopted special registration numbers, often passed down through generations, reflecting personal significance or family history.
The origins of this tradition can be traced back to 1990 when Pandurang Yadav, a local farmer and politician, chose the number 7777 for his first vehicle. His decision inspired others in the community to follow suit, leading to a widespread adoption of this practice. Interestingly, an older report suggests that the trend of selecting unique vehicle numbers began nearly fifty years ago, driven by personal interest and community encouragement among vehicle owners.
Residents often select numbers based on personal preferences, such as lucky digits or memorable sequences. For instance, the Yadav family has eight vehicles all registered with the number 0554, while their neighbor, Sajrao Salunke, has three two-wheelers registered as 1314, which he considers lucky. The Dalvi family, with 25 members, has all their 11 vehicles marked with 8282, showcasing how these numbers can signify familial connections.
The significance of these numbers extends beyond mere identification; they are seen as valuable assets. Residents often plan for their vehicle registration numbers even before purchasing a vehicle. Some have been known to wait months for their desired numbers, with one individual reportedly paying Rs 50,000 for the number 9999. This trend has also led to frequent auctions at the Kolhapur Regional Transport Office, where special numbers are awarded to the highest bidders, particularly around festive seasons.
As this tradition continues to flourish, it not only reinforces family ties but also reflects the cultural fabric of Prayag Chikhali. The practice of using vehicle numbers as identifiers has become so ingrained that many residents can recognize families simply by their vehicle registration numbers. Looking ahead, the demand for unique numbers is expected to persist, further embedding this practice into the community's identity.
