Maharashtra is preparing to conduct campus elections across its universities and colleges in January 2024, marking the first such elections in 33 years. This decision was announced following a meeting led by Chandrakant Patil, the state's higher and technical education minister, who emphasized the need for a committee to evaluate the guidelines for these elections and submit a report shortly. The government plans to finalize the modalities for the elections after the Diwali festival.

The proposed amendment to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act aims to facilitate the elections while ensuring that political parties do not interfere in the process. This amendment is expected to be presented during the upcoming winter session of the assembly. It will also establish expenditure limits for campaigns and prohibit discrimination based on caste, religion, or other social identities, promoting a more inclusive electoral environment.

An official noted that the resurgence of student movements across India has created a favorable atmosphere for campus elections, which are anticipated to provide a vital platform for student voices. During the same meeting, Patil addressed concerns regarding examination fees for students in drought-affected areas, reiterating that no fees should be collected from these students. He warned that strict actions would be taken against institutions that fail to comply with this directive.

The meeting also highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving the educational experience, including measures to prevent question paper leaks and enhance transparency in examination processes. The state government is planning to introduce a uniform academic calendar for public universities starting from the academic year 2027-28. Additionally, universities will be required to provide degree certificates via DigiLocker immediately after results are announced, streamlining the process for students.

Looking ahead, Minister Patil is scheduled to visit various universities between December 15 and January 15 to assess both academic and administrative operations. His visits will include stays in hostels to evaluate facilities such as accommodation, food quality, cleanliness, and drinking water availability. He also plans to engage directly with students to better understand their concerns and needs.
