Maharashtra to Establish Four New State Ports by 2026
Maharashtra's government announces plans for four state-owned ports to enhance maritime economy and create new revenue streams.
Four new ports will be developed in Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
Revenue projections for the ports range from ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore.
The initiative aims to boost freight movement and coastal employment in the region.
On October 30, 2026, Maharashtra's Ports Minister Nitesh Rane unveiled a significant initiative to develop four state-owned ports located in Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. This ambitious project is part of the broader Viksit Maharashtra 2047 vision, marking a strategic shift from the previous model of leasing coastal land to private entities. The government aims to enhance its maritime economy through this development, which is expected to create substantial economic opportunities for the region.
Currently, the Maharashtra ports department generates an annual revenue of approximately ₹250 to ₹258 crore from 48 non-major ports and jetties. With the introduction of these new ports, the government anticipates creating additional revenue sources to support freight movement, bolster maritime industries, and generate coastal employment. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in the state's economic growth and infrastructure development.
In addition to the new ports, Maharashtra is advancing a ship-manufacturing project at Jaigad in Ratnagiri district in collaboration with Goa Shipyard Limited. This project aims to establish a greenfield shipyard, further enhancing the state's maritime capabilities and contributing to the local economy.
The Maharashtra Maritime Development Policy-2023, announced in August 2023, underpins these developments. A High Powered Committee was formed in September 2026 to supervise the implementation of this policy, focusing on new port development, expansion of existing ports, and enhancing passenger water transport services. This comprehensive approach aims to modernize the state's maritime infrastructure and improve connectivity.
Looking ahead, the establishment of these ports is expected to create multimodal links, allowing for efficient distribution of goods across various transport modes, including sea, river, road, rail, and air. The development of specialized terminals for different cargo types will also enhance operational efficiency, positioning Maharashtra as a key player in the maritime sector. The government is optimistic about the potential economic impact and job creation that these initiatives will bring to the region.
