Maharashtra has reported a staggering total of 13,128 farmer suicides from January 2022 to June 2026, averaging more than eight suicides each day. This alarming statistic has raised concerns among activists, particularly Jeetendra Ghadge, who claims that the state has not disclosed district-wise figures requested under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The state's relief and rehabilitation department has indicated that out of the total suicides, 8,145 cases were found eligible for government assistance, while 4,042 were rejected as ineligible, and 941 cases remain under investigation. Among those eligible, 7,850 families have received compensation of Rs 1 lakh each, although 295 families are still awaiting their payments. Ghadge, representing the Young Whistleblowers Foundation, sought detailed monthly and district-wise data for this 54-month period to better understand the crisis.

On July 24, the department's public information officer, Snehal Sawant, informed Ghadge that the requested information could be obtained from individual district collector offices. Following this, Ghadge filed a first appeal on August 18, and after a hearing on September 8, the department provided a consolidated statewide table but withheld the district-specific breakdown, which Ghadge argues is essential for identifying areas of distress and evaluating the effectiveness of government interventions.

The implications of this data are significant, as understanding the geographical distribution of suicides can help in tailoring support and resources to the most affected areas. Ghadge has been advocating for broader financial protections for farmers, emphasizing the need for comprehensive measures to address the underlying issues contributing to these tragic outcomes.

Looking ahead, Ghadge's campaign for enhanced financial support dates back to a letter he sent to former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on June 21, 2023. He proposed that the Gopinath Munde Shetkari Apghat Vima Yojana be expanded to include suicides, ensuring that all affected families receive Rs 2 lakh, regardless of the cause of death. This initiative aims to provide a safety net for families grappling with the devastating impact of farmer suicides in Maharashtra.
