As of June 2026, Maharashtra's micro-business credit market has reached an impressive ₹4.07 lakh crore, solidifying its position as the largest in India. The growth in outstanding balances for individual entrepreneurs has been particularly noteworthy, expanding at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% over the past three years. In contrast, lending to micro businesses has seen a slower growth rate of 13%. This trend underscores the increasing reliance on individual borrowing to fuel entrepreneurial activities across the state.

The data reveals that approximately 43.8 lakh individual entrepreneurs in Maharashtra have never borrowed as formal enterprises, despite 69% of them maintaining credit scores above 730. This indicates a significant opportunity for lenders to tap into a market of established individual borrowers who may benefit from structured business financing. The findings stem from a joint study conducted by TransUnion CIBIL and the National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC), which emphasizes the potential for enhancing access to credit for eligible entrepreneurs.

Nationally, micro-business entrepreneurs account for a staggering ₹29.6 lakh crore in outstanding commercial credit, with individual borrowing growing at a 21% CAGR. This growth in individual borrowing, which outpaces enterprise lending, suggests a shift in how entrepreneurs are financing their ventures. The report highlights that while individual borrowers represent a significant portion of the credit landscape, there remains a gap in access to enterprise-level financing for many.

Maharashtra's diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem, which includes sectors such as trade, services, and transportation, plays a crucial role in this credit landscape. Trade alone accounts for 29% of outstanding balances among micro businesses, while construction and transport sectors have also shown robust growth. The role of private lenders and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) is significant, as they collectively finance nearly 68% of individual business borrower balances, reflecting their importance in supporting entrepreneurial growth in the region.

Looking ahead, the future of micro-business credit in Maharashtra hinges on bridging the gap between individual borrowing and enterprise-level credit. With many individual borrowers possessing established credit histories, there is a clear opportunity for lenders to facilitate access to more structured financing solutions. As the entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to evolve, understanding the credit needs of different segments will be essential for fostering sustainable growth and improving access to necessary capital.
