In a shocking incident in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, a man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend by pushing her into a 1,000-foot-deep gorge. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Tarannum Bashir Naik, was taken to the Naikwadi Waterfall by her boyfriend, 25-year-old Sripad Dinkar Vadar, under the pretense of a romantic outing on Friday.
The tragic event unfolded when Tarannum informed Shripad that she could not continue their relationship due to an impending arranged marriage. This revelation led to a heated argument, during which Shripad, in a fit of rage, pushed her into the gorge. Following the incident, he attempted to cover up his actions by claiming that Tarannum had slipped while they were taking a selfie together.
However, police became suspicious of his story and began to interrogate him. After several rounds of questioning, Shripad confessed to the crime and was subsequently arrested. The search for Tarannum's body concluded with its recovery from a depth of approximately 1,000 feet, and it was sent for a post-mortem examination at CPR Hospital in Kolhapur.
The couple had been in a relationship for about five years and lived in Shivajinagar, Gargoti. Tarannum had been reported missing since October 9, the day she was taken to the waterfall. The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with the victim's family alleging that Shripad has connections to a political leader, raising concerns about the integrity of the investigation.
Family members are demanding a thorough and impartial investigation, free from political influence, and have called for the case to be expedited through a fast-track court. They expressed their hope that this tragic incident would lead to better protection for women in rural areas.
