The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a significant new order aimed at halting the sale and repackaging of expired and spoiled food products. This initiative was revealed by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe during a press conference held on October 30, 2026. Mundhe emphasized that many expired items are not being destroyed as required but are instead being 'disposed of only on paper,' allowing them to be repackaged and sold again to unsuspecting consumers.
The FDA's new directive mandates that companies must provide documentation proving the proper disposal of any expired, spoiled, or returned food items. Furthermore, businesses are now required to obtain a certificate of destruction from disposal companies that are registered with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure compliance and protect public health.
In recent days, the FDA has conducted multiple operations across Maharashtra, resulting in the registration of two cases and the seizure of adulterated food products valued at ₹5 crore. In Bhiwandi, the agency has intensified its crackdown on illegal activities, confiscating stocks worth ₹80,000 and ₹26 lakh from various locations, including Gulzar Nagar. Additionally, operations have been executed in Vadpe, Padgha, and Ambarnath, leading to the suspension of licenses for individuals involved in these unlawful activities.
To date, the FDA has conducted ten operations, resulting in accusations against 32 individuals, including business owners. In an effort to clarify regulations, the department has issued 22 compliance orders across various sectors, including hotels, dairy products, edible oils, and school nutrition programs. These measures aim to ensure that businesses adhere to health and safety standards.
Moving forward, the FDA plans to continue its enforcement efforts, with more operations scheduled to address the ongoing issue of expired food sales. The agency's actions are expected to enhance consumer safety and restore public confidence in food quality across Maharashtra.
