The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of eight eateries in Mumbai, including various restaurants and bakeries, after inspections on October 21 and 22 revealed significant breaches in food safety and hygiene protocols. This action comes as part of the FDA's ongoing efforts to ensure public health and safety in food establishments.

During the inspections, officials discovered alarming conditions such as unsanitary kitchens, rusted utensils, and improper food handling practices, including the mixing of returned bread with fresh supplies. Additionally, employees were found working without valid medical certificates, and unauthorized food colors were detected in sweets. The eateries affected include well-known establishments like S.K. Bakery, Nekzad Restaurant, and a Domino's Pizza outlet, among others.

In a broader crackdown, the FDA seized a total of 37,991.4 kg of food stock across Maharashtra, valued at approximately ₹54.66 lakh, during the same inspections. The largest seizure occurred in Navi Mumbai, where officials confiscated over 33,000 kg of rajma and pulses from RDC Agro Ventures Pvt Ltd due to concerns over substandard quality and improper labeling. Other significant seizures included various food products from establishments in Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

The implications of these actions are significant for public health in Maharashtra, as the FDA aims to enforce stricter compliance with food safety regulations. The suspension of licenses serves as a warning to other food establishments regarding the importance of maintaining hygiene and quality standards. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and report any food safety concerns to the FDA.

Looking ahead, the FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has urged the public to utilize the toll-free number 1800222365 or the online grievance portal to report any issues related to food quality. This initiative reflects the FDA's commitment to improving food safety standards and protecting consumer health in the region.
