The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ramped up its enforcement efforts, leading to the suspension of licenses for 19 food establishments, including three Domino’s Pizza outlets in Mumbai. This crackdown is part of a broader initiative aimed at addressing food safety violations across the state, with inspections revealing serious issues such as pest infestations and improper food storage practices.

Among the establishments facing suspension, 17 are located in Mumbai, while two are edible oil repacking units in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The suspended Domino’s outlets are operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd. and are situated in Parel, Andheri East, and Borivali West. Other affected businesses include various hotels and restaurants, highlighting widespread concerns regarding food safety compliance.

The FDA's inspections uncovered multiple deficiencies, including the presence of cockroaches, rat-infested food packets, and the use of spoiled ingredients. In addition to the suspensions, the FDA imposed fines totaling ₹1.30 lakh on four establishments in Kandivali for similar violations. The department's actions are part of a festive-season drive to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

In a separate enforcement action on October 13, the FDA seized 17,784 kg of edible oil valued at ₹39.15 lakh from two repacking units in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, leading to immediate license suspensions. This is part of a larger operation that has seen the FDA target over 24,406 kg of suspected unsafe food products across various regions, including Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur.

On the drug enforcement front, the FDA reported a significant surge in inspections and actions from April to September 2026, conducting over 4,700 inspections and seizing drug stock worth ₹20.23 crore. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe emphasized the administration's commitment to safeguarding public health and indicated that inspections would continue to expand to prevent the circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines in the market.
