Maharashtra is grappling with a significant drought, prompting the state government to initiate relief measures. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar announced on October 14 that assistance will be provided based on the recommendations of a Central government team currently evaluating the situation in affected areas.

The drought has been exacerbated by erratic rainfall patterns, which have devastated crops across the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the severe impact of the drought, stating that while the Kharif season began with promising rainfall, it abruptly ceased, leading to extensive crop failures. The state has reported that 14.7 million hectares of Kharif crops are suffering from wilting due to prolonged dry spells lasting between 40 and 60 days.

In response to the crisis, the Maharashtra government has declared 265 out of 358 talukas as drought-affected, with plans to assist farmers even in areas not officially designated as such. Fadnavis assured that any village or farmer experiencing crop loss would receive government support, regardless of formal drought criteria. Preparations for aid distribution are already underway, focusing on both agricultural and drinking water needs.

The drought's ramifications are severe, particularly in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, which have recorded rainfall deficits of 38% and 27%, respectively. The state government has activated a 12-point relief package that includes waivers on student fees, electricity bill concessions, and enhancements to the Employment Guarantee Scheme. Fadnavis has urged residents to conserve drinking water, prioritizing it for human and livestock consumption over agricultural use during the summer months.

Looking ahead, Chief Minister Fadnavis has convened a meeting with the Central government's drought assessment team to discuss the need for increased financial support for Maharashtra. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the agricultural crisis, particularly as it may affect the upcoming Rabi crop. With a preliminary report submitted by the Central team, a final report is anticipated soon, and Fadnavis is committed to transforming this challenge into an opportunity for the state.
