On October 22, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to inaugurate three significant flyovers in Mumbai, specifically near the Sion and Vidyavihar railway stations and along the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road. The inauguration ceremony will take place virtually at 1 PM, with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar also in attendance. The event will be livestreamed at the respective locations, as announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

These infrastructure projects are designed to improve connectivity across the city, particularly enhancing east-west travel routes. The BMC highlighted that the new flyovers will significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion at critical junctions. Among the three flyovers, two are railway overbridges facilitating east-west connections, while the third is part of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, aimed at expediting travel between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.

The Sion railway overbridge, which has been reconstructed after the demolition of a century-old bridge deemed unsafe in 2019, is a key component of this initiative. This new structure will accommodate the planned fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla, as part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2). The project was completed four months ahead of its original timeline, which was set for February 2027, according to the BMC.

The Vidyavihar flyover, located at the Vidyavihar railway station, will connect Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in the east to Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west. This new route is expected to cut travel time between these two points from approximately 30 minutes to just 10 minutes, thereby reducing congestion on the existing flyover near Ghatkopar railway station.

Additionally, the third flyover, spanning 1.26 kilometers, is situated near the Hotel Ratnagiri junction in Goregaon East. This flyover connects General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg with Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road and is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion around Dindoshi court, Hotel Ratnagiri junction, and Valbhat River junction. It will also enhance connectivity as part of the broader east-west corridor linking the Eastern and Western Express Highways via twin tunnels, according to the BMC.
