Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has announced a significant initiative to designate 2027 as the Metro Year, aiming to complete at least 70 kilometers of metro routes across the state. This directive was issued during a recent meeting of the Chief Minister's War Room, which focused on reviewing ongoing infrastructure projects. Fadnavis emphasized the need for expedited completion of pending works to enhance the state's metro connectivity.
In his address, Fadnavis instructed officials to raise the target for metro line completions from 36 kilometers to 50 kilometers by December 2026. He highlighted that at least half of the project work should utilize mechanization to meet deadlines and address labor shortages effectively. This approach aims to ensure that skilled workers remain available for ongoing projects, thereby enhancing overall efficiency.
Specific directives were given for Metro Line 2B, which connects D.N. Nagar to Chembur. The Chief Minister proposed implementing a special 12-hour road block on Sundays for girder installations near Juhu Circle, with further road block decisions contingent on project progress assessments. Additionally, he mandated the completion of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor connection by May 31, 2027, to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
The meeting also addressed traffic management and utility infrastructure, with Fadnavis advocating for technology-driven solutions at critical junctions like Vakola. He instructed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to maintain updated maps of underground utilities to streamline infrastructure work. Safety measures at construction sites, including guidance boards and barricades, were also mandated to protect both workers and the public.
Looking ahead, Fadnavis warned contractors of potential blacklisting for delays beyond project deadlines and urged the swift resolution of legal and land possession issues affecting Metro Line 6. The Chief Minister's proactive measures signal a robust commitment to enhancing Maharashtra's metro infrastructure, with the 2027 target poised to significantly improve urban mobility in the region.
