Key stakeholders like BMC and MSRTC have significant electric bus requirements.
Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced that the state is targeting the procurement of 50,000 electric buses within the next three to four years. This ambitious plan aims to enhance public transport while addressing environmental concerns. During the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility by Pinnacle Industries, Fadnavis highlighted the pressing need for these buses and the challenges posed by the current manufacturing limitations.
The demand for electric buses in Maharashtra is substantial, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) planning to purchase 10,000 units and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) requiring approximately 30,000. Additionally, municipal corporations in Pune and Nagpur have expressed their need for electric buses, further underscoring the urgency of expanding production capabilities.
Fadnavis urged Pinnacle Industries to increase its manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand for electric buses. He emphasized the importance of producing these vehicles under the 'Make in Maharashtra' initiative, which aims to bolster local manufacturing and create jobs in the state. "Buses manufactured under this initiative would be more convenient for us," he stated, reinforcing the state's commitment to local production.
The initiative to expand the electric bus fleet is part of Maharashtra's broader strategy to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions. The state government is prioritizing electric vehicles as a key component of its environmental policy, aligning with national goals for cleaner public transport.
Looking ahead, the state government plans to collaborate with various stakeholders to facilitate the production and procurement of electric buses. Upcoming discussions and meetings will focus on addressing manufacturing challenges and ensuring that the targets set for the next few years are met effectively.
