Bengal enters its Ranji Trophy Elite Group-C match against Maharashtra on Monday as the favorite, buoyed by a series of three consecutive victories. With a total of 18 points, Bengal returns to Eden Gardens for the first time this season, eager to maintain its winning momentum against the second-placed Maharashtra, which has accumulated 12 points through a six-pointer and two first innings leads.
The Bengal team boasts a strong batting lineup, featuring players like Sudip Gharami, who has been in good form, and Shahbaz Ahmed, who recently scored a century. Captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, along with his new opening partner Ankur Paul, will aim to convert their promising starts into substantial scores. Additionally, experienced batsman Sudip Chatterjee and the promising Sumanta Gupta are expected to contribute significantly to the team's performance.
On the bowling front, Bengal will field a combination of three pace bowlers and two spinners, led by the seasoned Mohammed Shami. The spin attack includes Shahbaz, who has impressed with his all-round capabilities since returning to the squad, and Pradipta Pramanik, who recently took 10 wickets against Kerala, making them a formidable challenge for any batting lineup.
Maharashtra, featuring a younger squad, heavily relies on the batting prowess of Ankit Bawne, who has scored two centuries this season, and Digvijay Patil. Captain Prithvi Shaw, who has a score of 70, is also expected to play a crucial role in their batting strategy. The team has shown potential with contributions from Harshad Kate and Saurabh Nawale, who have both made half-centuries in their previous match against Gujarat.
As both teams prepare for this critical encounter on a well-maintained pitch with a lush outfield, they are keen to secure maximum points before the upcoming break. However, the forecast of rain poses a slight concern for the match's progression.
